To joystick or not

All too often I see boaters step up to a larger boat while lacking skills and experience to handle a larger vessel. The answer almost every time to why they do is, "well it's got a joystick". Don't get me wrong, I'm all for having a joystick to help when the conditions call for it, but I tend to rarely use it. I find myself using it most when I have a breeze or current pushing me into the dock while trying to leave. I turn it on, get the boat moving sideways and then go back to the "old way". One should always know how to operate their vessel without the joystick. What if it fails while using it? What if it won't turn on? It's a very complex computer making thousands of calculations per second to move your boat. I can go on all day on this subject. Bottom line is that it's a fallback method that has a time and place but NEVER rely on it. Learn to drive your boat and know how it handles before completely relying on your joystick.
